DXO seemed to always render a dreamy, surreal feel to my photographs. My apprehension is this, once I submit to this new software that’ll be it, I will work exclusively within it for the foreseeable future. Yet companies when advertising the majority of Photography jobs available I notice almost always require knowledge and experience of working with Capture One. What are your opinions or preferences over the 2. Yes I have a 30 day trial of DXO, but I don’t want to miss out on the sale offer, so I only have 4 days to make a decision….

That’s probably why I am more interested in decent end-result Photography over the technology that was used to produce it. You mean Optical Viewfinder-less. Capture One for example has very powerful and reliable tethering capability. It’s a natural companion to Phase One cameras. For many professional studios, being able to use Capture One sessions rather than catalogues or nothing at all as is the case with DXO is a crucial part of their workflow.

There is a very effective method of sharing files and all edit information between photographer, retoucher and client EIP not present in other programs.

There is a versatile two way back and forwards work flow between Capture 1 and PS, where edits are saved and transferred. In some areas of photography Capture One is the industry standard, and you may well be expected to use it in a potentially fast working environment e.

Good as DXO is, if you are looking at working in the industry, I suspect that for some time to come, Lightroom, Photoshop and Capture One , are the programs you need to invest time in learning. I have used DXO off and on for years, and will be upgrading to the newest version, but in spite of many comparisons over the years, I still have C1 as my main raw processor as on balance it seems to more consistently allows “me” to get the quality I’m happy with.

I am a personal [hobbyist] photographer, couldn’t care less for tethering. That kind of “convenient feature” has as many negative aspects as it does positive ones. Really, as a mobile “off-road” photographer who shoots raw that’s a pun as opposed to scripted professional shoots I am OK with not being plugged into the grid. What I am after is image processing and final output that brings out the best possible proof as printed on my Canon Pixma ProS.

Up until now I have been quite happy, but it’s like until you see an improvement in quality it is then that you realize what you have been working on previous up until that point is actually lackluster. What I notice with this newest version of DXO is it is definitely speedier and it seems at least one the one image I used, to be less “surreal” in appearance and actual more natural than Capture One.

Also this image seemed crisper unsharp mask settings? Ah, OK I misunderstood your reference to adverts asking for C1 experience as meaning you were looking for a career in professional photography, and tethering is an important reason for why C1 is popular. I think the image quality argument between raw processors is nearly always going to be subtle and you just need go for the software that works for you, and learn to get the most out of whatever you have.

Don’t get me wrong, I have worked in industry before, but have always brought my personal unique ability to the table. Of course, I am adaptable and willing to work within a set established streamline, but prefer to shoot on the road as opposed to in-house.

Beggars can’t be choosers, but yes image rendition quality is paramount when choosing software in lieu of any features for convenience of workflow. After another hour on DXO PhotoLab I am starting to notice some inconsistencies and it is definitely coming weak in some areas compared to C1. For one, local colour correction is limited to changing saturation levels and white balance, but I haven’t seen the option to change hue, like you can in Viveza RGB values or C1.

This will probably hopefully be introduced in some future update or version. I’d also like things like moire-removal to be available locally in DxO PhotoLab, because the global correction does its job well in the problem areas but desaturates small but important colourful details in a photo e. Another omission: this new version still keeps the old Exporting formula, where if you want to export for web, you have to decide if you want to downsize with plain Bicubic which leads to softening or the default Bicubic Sharper which is too strong.

I hope that in the future they’ll include some of the Nik Output Sharpener’s tech. I’m in the same situation as you. DxO OpticsPro was good but never convinced me in the end. Why you say there is only 4 days to take the introductory offer? When does it expire? This is true. I found this comparing LR to Capture.

Only real difference is LR offers Low, Standard and High for export sharpening while Capture lets you fine tune the amount. I think, many professionals don’t have that luxury, and that image rendition is about being “fit for purpose” rather than the best it possibly can be. Well, I have always ended up coming back to C1 in the end, but I will still no doubt update to this latest version of DXO, but at the moment I have ended up using it for only one thing: Prime Noise reduction with high ISO Nikon 1 files.

Just as an aside, I have just been impressed with the results of Topaz Detail, but by using the result from Topaz as an example, I found that with more careful use of clarity, structure, sharpness and detail in C1, I seemed able to get, for my purposes, identical results. Actually, I ended up preferring the C1 result. It just keeps reminding me that “my” quality issues are really all about skill development, and not very much about the software I’m using.

Even more torn than ever now, they’re both outstanding in their own right. Not used the latest version, but I ended up buying C1 and DXO after testing, and hardly ever use DXO as in practice I just always ended up preferring the quality of the C1 images, and you can do a lot tweeks with C1. I’m embarrassed to say after all the griping I caved.

Like I said perhaps in other threads it took a year to warm up to LR and another few to fine tune and get it the way I wanted it. I did a bunch more tests with Capture and frankly there was just no knock your socks off difference for me. I read on another thread what happens if they go full subscription.

They are already offering it. LR classic install was seamless, took less than 5 minutes to open and picked up my old catalogue, presets and defaults. Same for my laptop. I’ll give a year and see. It is like nothing changed expect for Adobe’s meat hooks but now I get Dehaze which is very nice.

I do have the 3rd party one on LR6. Have not explored the other new things yet. I’m working on my desktop and external drives and I have not even seen the word cloud. I don’t even know how to send any images to the free 20 gigs and I won’t use it anyway so I don’t care. I’m not even going to download LR CC. I wish I could sell it and the 20 gigs lol. At this site they said it would wipe out LR6 and to uncheck the box but when I opened it was unchecked.

Perhaps Adobe changed the default setting because they were getting complaints. I’m not thrilled with Adobe but Im relieved and actually sorta happy that this is over for a while. I got tired of of testing and worrying about the future. Happy to sue something I know well. Switching between Develop and Library is instant. Export speeds have doubled from 8 to 9 seconds to about 4 to 5. Nothing wrong with this decision. Its good to get it out of your system and feel happy that staying with LR is the best choice.

As regards the C1 subscription, at the moment they certainly have a different attitude to the subscription from Adobe, as they are advising individuals against the subscription route saying its been set up for primarily to benefit multi-user situations, and individuals won’t benefit from it. I have to admit that I can’t get my head fully around their argument for this, and it does seem that subscriptions are the way more and more programs are going, so who will know what will happen.

But good luck with LR, I have been impressed with how much faster the new classic is on my computer. Color although subjective, C1 better to me , 2 color to choose, film standard or film extra shadow more subdue natural color. This is all at default setting, I don’t care if one can tweak setting and make OpticsPro match itI.

Fair enough, but I’m not sure that its a good way to decide between raw processors, a minor tweak, that could be baked in as a preset or import preset might make a big difference to your choice.

Well, my core Raw Processor is C1, and I always come back to it after testing alternatives, But I’ve always tried to get the best I could get out of the alternatives, before making the decision. But as I said in the last post, I find the differences more subtle than you are finding.

But then you may miss out on some of the things DXO offers, like superior noise reduction at high ISOs, or a wider range of auto lens corrections. I would have thought this was an even bigger reason to set up your own default presets even if in C1 to make sure you get the best results over so many images processed without any individual adjustments.

Well I have tried lots of options, over the years, and I have also found C1 to be the most consistent at producing useable default images. This has been my conclusion, after less than 24 hours sampling DXO PhotoLab after the novelty of “new” software wears off it is now apparent it is little more than cumbersome DXO 11 with the addition of a few bells and whistles.

C1 hands down wins all day long. As for emigrating to a subscription plan what I haven’t read on these forums the past few days is… why do people even feel the need to “upgrade”? There is a reason I still run on Windows 7. By choice. If it ain’t broken then why fix it?

I either trial it or own it indefinitely. It is blatantly obvious the way this Internet Cyberspace is morphing towards and this is the exact reason I am headed back to reality, and Print! Its sometime since I have used it, but its certainly measured in minutes rather than seconds. But My Mac Mini, which while well specced for a Mini, isn’t that well specced in the grand scheme of computer specs.

I would ideally batch process files and just walk away and do something else when it was doing its thing.
